“Vital Spark”

The St Peter Port Lifeboat was called out Sunday 7th August 2016 to go to the assistance of a 23 foot motor cruiser with four persons on board. The “Vital Spark” had suffered engine failure approximately 3.5 miles S.E. of St Martins Point. As there were no other vessels in the area able to offer assistance, the “Spirit of Guernsey” was tasked to assist.

The Lifeboat left St Peter Port at 20:30 and was alongside the casualty at 20:49. A tow was established and the Spirit of Guernsey arrived back at St Peter Port with the casualty at 21:40.

St Peter Port Lifeboat launched to assist french yacht “Bouchon”

At 1953 on the evening of Tuesday 2nd August 2016, Guernsey Coastguard received a Mayday call via Cross-ma that the french yacht “Bouchon” was experiencing engine difficulties approximately 1nm north of Sark.

The Spirit of Guernsey departed at 2030 and found the yacht “Bouchon” with (3) crew on board at 2051. After attaching a towline to the casualty the lifeboat returned to St Peter Port harbour arriving at 2210 with the French yacht in tow.

“Spirit of Guernsey” responded to Jetski broken down, 2 persons on board on the west coast of Guernsey

1919 A call was overheard by Guernsey Coastguard from a Jet-ski, on the west coast requesting a tow as the Jet ski had a flat battery and was therefore unable to proceed.

1920 An “ All Ships “ broadcast was unsuccessful, as no other vessels were in the area able to assist the disabled Jetski.

1955 “ Spirit of Guernsey” passing Pierheads heading north. Eta on scene 2030

2007 Casualty has drifted rapidly in the tide and is now off Port Soif and has eyes on the Lifeboat.

2016 “Spirit of Guernsey“ alongside casualty, casualties on board, retrieving the Jetski.

2030 Lifeboat returning to St Peter Port. All accounted for and safe.

2047 “ Spirit of Guernsey” Pierheads . Casualty vessel being off loaded.

2153 Lifeboat back on station.

This incident had a good conclusion as the Casualty Vessel was carrying a good VHF and was therefore able to communicate efficiently with the Emergency Services.

The two men had all the right equipment but needed help as they couldn't make their own way ashore. Award presentation to Alf Solway

Mr Alf Solway has been an ardent and committed supporter of the RNLI in Guernsey for a number of years and has now raised over £30,500 towards provision of lifeboat facilities in Guernsey. In recognition of his outstanding and ongoing efforts, a presentation ceremony was held on Wednesday evening at the St. Peter Port Lifeboat Station, at which members of his family, the crew of “The Spirit of Guernsey”, the lifeboat management team and fundraisers were on hand to thank him for his outstanding commitment. The Bailiff, Sir Richard Collas presented Mr. Solway with a plaque, a picture certificate and a St Peter Port lifeboat mug.

Celia Allen MBE, chair of the fundraising Guild said that Alf is, by any measure, a top fundraiser. She also thanked Mrs. Jenny Ridley for providing a fine buffet. One crew member commented,”Without doubt, the chocolate cake alone will keep the crew sustained for some time”. Buz White, coxswain, said “Alf is treasured by the crew for his effort and commitment. He can always be relied upon to help us help others.”

Shooting Star

Air Search 1 and the St Peter Port Lifeboat were called out this evening to search for a Jersey registered vessel “Shooting Star” which had left Sark earlier in the afternoon. Jersey Coastguard had picked up the spoken word Mayday, but had difficulty establishing VHF communications with the vessel. At 20:09 Jersey contacted Guernsey Coastguard and advised them that they had made contact via mobile phone, and that the vessel was South of Alderney.

Due to the differing positions given by Shooting Star to Guernsey Coastguard after they had made contact via mobile phone, and being informed that the vessel was low on fuel, the decision was made to launch the rescue services.

Air Search 1 made contact with the casualty at 21:43, South East of Jethou and the Lifeboat was alongside the vessel at 21:54.

The Spirit of Guernsey escorted the Shooting Star to St Peter Port and was back on station at 22:07.
